Grading

Bruce Lee

“If you always put limits on what you do, physical or anything else, it’ll spread over your life. It’ll spread in to your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them… a man must constantly exceed his level.”

Judo belt coloursEveryone is different and therefore as individuals we progress at different rates, learn in different ways and want something unique for ourselves from the training we undertake and instruction we receive. Whether you are all about Judo or you are practicing Karate, or both, Your Path to your own personal goals will be unique, fun and challenging. Our instructors are here to guide you on your way to success and achievement and push you on that little bit further each time you train.

To help your progression members are provided with a grading syllabus and regular grading sessions are held throughout the year. our Judo is practised to the highest level, and we ensure external examiners are present for all our gradings in order to maintain these exceptional standards.

Why grade?

Grading enables you to see if you have understood the technical requirements for each grade. Grading also tests you under pressure. This is when you find out what you really know. Once you have achieved your grade you will have total confidence in your techniques and ability. Many of our students say that after passing their gradings they feel they can go on in life to do anything they choose and succeed.

How many grades to Black belt?

In Judo we have 7 belts before you reach your 1st Dan Black Belt, each belt is also divided into three MON grades. This can take you between 7 and 9 years to achieve depending on the level of effort and commitment you put in to your training. It isn’t easy, but then it’s not meant to be. You can think of your Black Belt as the Martial Arts equivalent to an Academic Degree.

Students in general should grade every 4 – 6 months. This is a rough guideline, some people will move quicker others will take longer. It’s not about getting to your goal the quickest it’s about making the most of your journey towards your goal. Always push yourself to understand your techniques and how to use them effectively, ask questions and condition your mind and body, start to see what is possible.

Testimonials

I just wanted to thank you for the great time my son has had on the training camps. It goes to show that a more intensive training opportunity can still be great fun.

Even just one day, is the equivalent of about a month and a half of once a week club nights if you think about it. However, the students are also having a great chance to improve their fitness. This is through other activities on the camps like running (Hare and hounds) plus the many other games you play. These also teach team work and the value of cooperation. I think this is important because Judo is not just a sport for the individual.

The camps have certainly had an impact on my son’s game. I have just renewed his BJA licence and in one year he has been through 6 grades and that is a fact! I can’t believe you are now ready to grade him again. Ironically, I teach students the importance of “Progression Routes” and I see that there is a clear Judo syllabus and a clear pathway for all ages that allows the younger players to have fun but also take their training seriously. All of these things are lessons for life.

The other thing you do is expose the students to an amazing talent pool via other instructors who are champions in their own right. My son often talks about his coaching from you, Ben, Gavin, Ron, Sam, Peter and Neil and others. A good role model is a powerful motivator. No surprise then that he wants to watch the Judo at the 2012 Olympics in person!

I would honestly recommend to any parent, the benefits of the training camps at The A.S.Judo Academy of Excellence.

“As a professional martial artist and coach I have to say it was a pleasure watching and experiencing Alan coaching a group of novices in the art of Judo. He is a great communicator and extremely knowledgeable about Judo, its techniques and applications. I would advise anyone who is interested in taking up this effective and fun martial art to contact Alan Scott. Ben Richardson 2nd Dan and Instructor in KUGB Shotokan Karate.
